Best AC Units for Florida Homes: Carrier Options, SEER2 and Sizing
The best air conditioner for a Florida home is not the biggest one or the one with the highest rating on the box. It is the system that is sized right for your house, runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air, and can stand up to heat and salt air season after season. For most homes in Jacksonville, Yulee and Fernandina Beach, that means a Carrier heat pump or air conditioner matched to your home, in one of three lines: Infinity for the best humidity control and efficiency, Performance for the middle ground, and Comfort for a solid system at the lowest installed price.
Comfort Zone of North Florida is one of the top 10 Carrier dealers in Florida, and our technicians are paid hourly with no sales quotas and no commission. So the recommendation below is the same one we give at a kitchen table: buy for humidity and sizing first, efficiency second, and brand features last.

Start with sizing, because Florida punishes an oversized system
An oversized system cools the house fast, shuts off, and leaves the moisture behind. The house feels cool and clammy, and the system starts and stops all day, which wears parts out sooner. An undersized system runs and runs on a 95 degree afternoon and never catches up.
That is why we size a system to the home before we quote one. Square footage is only part of it. Insulation, windows, ceiling height, ductwork and how much sun the house gets all change the load. Get the size right and even a mid-line system will feel better than an oversized premium one.
SEER2, in plain English
SEER2 is the current efficiency rating for central air conditioners and heat pumps. It replaced the old SEER rating in 2023 with a tougher test that reflects real ductwork, so a SEER2 number runs a little lower than the old SEER number for the same equipment.
- The minimum for a new split air conditioner installed in Florida is 14.3 SEER2 for most home sizes, and split heat pumps must also meet 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 for heating.
- Higher is more efficient, and Florida homes run their systems for so much of the year that stepping up can be worth it. It is still the second decision, after sizing and humidity control.
The three Carrier lines, and who each one fits
Carrier Infinity: best humidity control
Variable-speed systems with Greenspeed Intelligence that adjust in small steps instead of just on and off. Air conditioners in this line reach up to 21 SEER2, and heat pumps reach up to 20 SEER2, with sound as low as 54 to 55 decibels. Because they run longer at low speed, they remove more humidity and hold a steadier temperature. This is the line we recommend most for coastal homes and for anyone who has fought a clammy house.
High-efficiency variable-speed systems start at $9,500 at Comfort Zone, before any current offers.
Carrier Performance: the middle ground
Two-stage and variable-speed options that run at a lower, quieter speed most of the time and step up on the hottest afternoons. Systems in this line reach up to 18 SEER2. For many Jacksonville and Yulee homes, this is the best balance of comfort, humidity control and price.
Carrier Comfort: a dependable system at the lowest price
Single-stage systems that reach up to 16.5 SEER2. Less humidity control than the lines above, because the system is either fully on or fully off, but a clear step up from an older 10 to 14 SEER unit.
Full system replacement at Comfort Zone runs $5,600 to $9,562 for low to mid tier systems. The real price for your home is set after a $99 diagnostic and load check, with the findings in writing before any work starts.

Heat pump or straight air conditioner?
For North Florida, a heat pump is the right call for most homes. It cools in summer and heats in winter with the same system, and our winters are mild enough that a heat pump handles nearly every cold night we get. A straight air conditioner paired with a furnace or air handler makes sense mainly when a home already has gas heat it plans to keep. If you are not sure which you have now, we will tell you on the diagnostic visit, in writing.
What about ductless mini-splits?
Ductless is the right answer for a garage conversion, a sunroom, an addition, a workshop, or a room that never matches the rest of the house. It is not a cheaper way to cool a whole home that already has good ductwork. Ductless mini-split installation at Comfort Zone starts at $4,865 for one zone.
The refrigerant change, without the scare talk
New Carrier systems now use Puron Advance, also called R-454B. It has about 75 percent lower global warming potential than the R-410A used in older systems, and new equipment has been built for it since January 1, 2025.
If your current system uses R-410A, you do not need to replace it because of the refrigerant. R-410A systems can still be serviced and repaired. Replace a system because it is failing, costing too much to run, or no longer keeping the house comfortable, not because someone told you the refrigerant makes it obsolete. That is also why we offer free second opinions: many large quoted repairs turn out to be small repairs.
Salt air and the coast
Homes in Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island and along the Nassau and St. Johns rivers live with salt air that eats outdoor coils. Ask about corrosion protection on the outdoor unit, keep the coil rinsed and clean, and keep up with maintenance twice a year. A system that is cleaned and checked holds its efficiency longer, whatever line it came from.
Add a smart thermostat last, not first
A good thermostat helps a good system. It does not fix a wrong-sized one. Once the system is right, a smart thermostat can trim run time and let you adjust the house before you get home. See our smart thermostats page for what we install.
