HVAC Energy Efficiency Ratings and How They Work

As an experienced HVAC contractor, we recommend that homeowners study a system’s energy efficiency rating before buying it. Understanding energy efficiency ratings will help you choose the best heating and air conditioning system for your home. The criteria used to measure an HVAC system’s performance include the SEER, EER, AFUE, and HSPF ratings. Today we will explain what each energy performance rating means:

SEER

The seasonal energy efficiency rating or SEER shows the electrical input needed to run your cooling system over a season compared with the amount of cooling the system generates. A high SEER rating means that a system can provide more cooling using the same amount of energy compared to a system with a lower SEER rating.

AFUE

This rating measures the annual fuel utilization of a heating system. It mainly applies to water heaters, furnaces, and boilers. A high AFUE rating means that your heating equipment has high thermal efficiency, so more heat is generated and conversion losses are minimal compared to systems with a low AFUE rating. As an experienced residential and commercial air conditioning service provider, we recommend choosing equipment with high ratings because they can help save you money on bills.

EER

The energy efficiency ratio or EER is another way to measure the operating efficiency of your cooling equipment. Compared with the SEER, the EER is calculated by testing an air conditioning system at a higher operating temperature. The EER rating also takes humidity removal into account. Use the EER to gauge how well a cooling system will perform under a maximum cooling load.

HSPF

The heating seasonal performance factor or HSPF measures the efficiency of an HVAC system over a heating season. It is similar to the SEER rating, however, you can use the HSPF rating to see how well a heating system will perform over time in regard to efficiency.
