How to Prepare Your Air Conditioning for Summer

Once summer is in full swing, the last thing you want is for your air conditioning to fail. Air conditioning units can develop problems even when they’ve just been sitting idle for months. Fortunately, you can prevent your AC from failing with proper care and maintenance.

Comfort Zone of North Florida Inc., your local HVAC contractor, shares how to prepare your air conditioning unit for summer.

Filter Maintenance: Cleaning and Replacing

The first step in your summer maintenance is to clean or replace the filters of the AC unit. While most filters need cleaning only twice a year, that rule doesn’t always apply. If you notice that your unit isn’t pumping out as much cold air as it’s supposed to, the filter may already be clogged with dust. Similarly, you’ll want to replace old and damaged filters.

Cleaning the Coils

Next, you’ll want to clean out the unit’s condenser coils. This step is a bit complicated, which is why we recommend taking advantage of our residential and commercial air conditioning service. You’ll find the condenser outside, within the large metal box housing the fan. It’s best to have a professional technician work on it.

Clogged coils can cut down the condenser’s efficiency, forcing your unit to work harder to cool your home. Clean the coils at the beginning of every season. Additionally, you’ll want to cover the condenser during the other months to protect it from debris, dirt, and leaves.

Check the Coolant

The unit’s refrigerant tubes and pipes are usually covered with foam sleeves that insulate them and prevent the unit from losing energy. Over time, the insulation itself may end up frayed. If this is the case, simply replace it with a new foam insulation sleeve to keep your unit running in good condition.

These are just some of the ways you can keep your air conditioning unit in good condition and better prepare it for summer. Take advantage of our expert air conditioning repair and maintenance and we’ll make sure your unit performs at its best throughout its service life.
